FAAC 455D - wiring issues?
#1
Hello everyone.

I think I have an issue with the wiring of the close sensors on our gates - we have a pair of gates with FAAC arms and a 455D PCB, with optical closing sensors across the gate posts.

As a result of a long story, I swapped in a brand new 455D board and kept the existing wiring and connectors which I plugged into it, set the same settings as before including setting them to Automatic, and then did the complete Time Learning sequence which worked perfectly (Leaf A open, slow, stop; Leaf B open, slow, stop, close, slow, stop; Leaf A close, slow, stop). I had hoped it would just work...

When removing the original board and unplugging connectors, a couple of the wires from the closing sensor were loosely in connector slots. I assumed they had pulled out so fixed them back in. However I only have the top 2 bars showing - when I press the pedestrian access button the pedestrian leaf opens (light comes on) but it never closes. I understand this implies the closing safety device is active... I changed the Fail Safe option to check, and indeed when I do this the pedestrian leaf doesn't even attempt to open.

I figure either I've messed up the wiring or the sensors are broken - without knowing if I've wired it correctly I can't tell which it is though. I can't understand how this should be wired:

So the closing sensor is the grey wire in the bottom right. I have green going to 12, black and white going to 14, and red going to 17. I have an old photo of the board from a year ago but it's unclear on that whether red and black were wired into 14 and 17 or just "near them". I have tried taking red and black out but it hasn't worked and I know I shouldn't be guessing!   Sad

As far as I can tell the other half of the sensor is blue=16 and brown=17 (the cable is underground).

When I read the FAAC manual it doesn't explain anything more than connecting to 12 for closing photocells (I don't understand what the RXCL/TXCL diagrams reference?). I also read it to imply that there should be a wire doing directly from 13 to 19 as there is no opening sensor but there has never been a wire there?

I'm pretty confused, I would really appreciate any help on this please.

Thanks.

Hi Jonah,

Is it possible you could let me know which photocells you are using? Are they being wired with 2 cores or 4 cores?

Many Thanks,

Aiden.

Hi Aiden

Thanks so much for the reply. The photocells are Roger Technology, I can't see a model number on them but they look like these:

https://www.rogertechnology.it/en/soluti...0/m90f2eso
https://www.rogertechnology.it/public/us...2%20A5.pdf

On my photo above, one of the cables from the photocells is the thinner, darker grey one coming up from the bottom right that has 4 cores (green, black, white and red). The other photocell cable comes under the driveway so I'm not 100% sure which one it is as there are 3 cables coming out of the ground that look the same!

Here is a zoomed out photo:

So the other photocell cable is most likely either the one below (ie. dark grey 3rd from bottom) with blue=16,brown=17 or the second one down which is blue=9, brown=12?

From my very limited electrical knowledge that manual makes it look like 1 cable is 4 core and the other is 2 core which makes sense?

One other point, I am sure there used to be a visible infra-red type light from at least one of the photocells but I can't see that now - both photocells are 100% secure and sealed onto granite posts so I don't believe they are misaligned if that helps!

Thanks.

Another bump to see if anyone might be able to decode where this wiring is wrong please?

Hi Jonah,

Apologies for the delayed response.

Using the photocells in the first link as reference you would wire as per below. I would find out which cables from the photocell is going to the control panel and which colours are which.

+ From Photocell (Terminal 1) -> Terminal 17
- From Photocell (Terminal 2) -> Terminal 16
Normally Closed (N.C) From Photocell (Terminal 3) -> Terminal 12
Common © From Photocell (Terminal 4) -> Terminal 14

I hope this was useful,

Many Thanks

Aiden.

Thanks - I spoke to FAAC and Roger Technology and with their help we deduced it was either the photocells or the cable, so I bit the bullet and cut away the silicone around the photocell to open it up... as I unscrewed the cover it was like a waterfall:

So now I will replace those and try again... perhaps the wiring wasn't an issue after all, but I will post back with an update after replacing the photocells!
