should the edge light be lit if nothing is connected, does the 8ohm resistor not stop this from lighting up. what led should be lit if only using 1 set of photocells on open/close

The 8.2K resistor should be connected, You should have the open/close light off, Open flashing and close flashing. Edge should be off. Make sure you have put the learn fail safe photocells jumper on, reset the board, and removed the jumper to learn the photocell configuration.
